Professor Rao ne apne carrer ki start Dr Vikram Sarabhai ke assistent bun ke ki thi . Doctorate pura karne ke baad vo America chale gaye the . vaha unhone NASA ke pioneer and explorer pe experiment kiya and then professor ka kaam kiya. But 1966 me vo India vapis aa gaye or 1975 me unhone apna first succesful satelight (ARYABHAT ) launch kiya space me . iss time pe unhone 20 se zada satelight banaye the communication and meteorological services improve karne ke liye .
Professor Rao ko Padma Bhushan award 1976 me diya gaya tha and Padma Vibhushan 2017 me . Unko Satellite Hall of Fame, Washington , me include kiya gaya tha 19th march 2013 me , at a ceremony by Society of Satellite Professionals International . Ishi ke sath ye first Indian ban gaye jo isme induct hue the . Unko International Astrounautics Federation (IAF) me bhi induct kiya gaya tha 15th may 2016 me . Iss me bhi vo pehle Indian the jo iss position tak pohchey .

As Chairman Of ISRO
1985 me ISRO KE Chairman ka incharge lene ke baad Rao ne rocket technology ko accelerate kiya jiska result successful hua and ASLV rocket ko launch kiya gaya 1992 me . Vo responsible they PSVL launch vehicle development ke liye jo ki fully operational tha and jo successfully 850kg missile launch hua polar orbit me in1995.
INSAT satellites ne India ke communication ko bohot aggey badha diya or nohot asan bana diya. INSAT satellite ko launch karne me inka bohot bada help the 1980s and 1990s me. Iss development ne India ko Information Technology Hub me develop karne me bohot help ki hai.
